Project: EXPLOITING THE POTENTIAL OF SELECTED WILD FRUITS IN THE PRODUCTION OF HIGH VALUE MARKET PRODUCTS FOR FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL SECURITY (2017-2018)
Funders: National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) Competitive Grants Scheme
Co-Implementers: National Chemotherapeutics Research Institute (NCRI), Ministry of Health; School of Food Technology, Nutrition and Bioengineering (SFTNB), Makerere University; Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPPS), Mbarara University of Science and Technology
Nature and Livelihoods is leading this project with NCRI, SFTNB, and DPPS as partners. It is seeking to add value to four wild plant taxa that have traditionally been sources of edible fruits in the drylands of eastern Uganda by formulating various high value food and beverage products from the fruit. In addition, it is conducting comprehensive chemical analyses of the fruits and trialing ways to propagate the plants in ways that would be cost effective to the rural farmer.
